Essential oils to calm anger are good to keep on hand. Unexpressed anger can result in chronic symptoms and conditions. Tiredness, apathy, concentration issues, back and shoulder aches and pains, intestinal problems, rashes and other skin problems, and more. It’s also a lead cause of dangerously high blood pressure and a rise in the likelihood of a stroke. Anger is an important aspect of our psychological well-being, yet it’s often socially wrong to express or let go of anger.
The trick is to keep balanced. There’s nothing wrong with the emotion of anger, but having so much that it’s constantly getting you into trouble is a bad thing and often happens when it gets bottled up.
There are three categories for essential oils to help with anger issues: calming down anger, coping with anger, and releasing anger.
Calming Down Anger
Before we are able to really deal with anger at the source, we must first calm down long enough that we can look at the heart of the matter. Some great essential oils that help with calming down anger are:

Essential oils are a great asset to have when coping with anger, but it’s important to remember that there are other lifestyle changes that will also help—such as yoga, deep breathing exercises, counseling, punching a cushion instead of a face, etc. Find what works for you and work with it. In a society where we are expected to bite our tongue and swallow our anger, it’s important to be able to release anger safely. Some great essential oils that help to release unexpressed anger are:

- Ylang Ylang essential oil is derived from the star-shaped flowers of the tropical Ylang Ylang tree and is used extensively in making perfumes and in aromatherapy. In aromatherapy, Ylang Ylang is used to lessen tension and stress and to promote a positive outlook. Ylang Ylang blends well with Bergamot, Geranium, Grapefruit, and Vetiver.
- Bergamot is the most delicate of the citrus plants, requiring special climate and soil in order to thrive. Italians have used Bergamot for years to reduce feelings of stress and to soothe and rejuvenate skin. Bergamot is unique among citrus oils due to its ability to be both uplifting and calming, making it ideal to help with anxious and sad feelings. It is also purifying and cleansing for the skin while having a calming effect. Bergamot may help relieve depression, grief, and stress.
- Vetiver, a member of the grass family, is grown for many reasons. Unlike other grasses, the root system of Vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping to prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. Vetiver has a rich, exotic, complex aroma that is used extensively in perfumes. Due to Vetiver’s calming, grounding effect on the emotions, it is an ideal oil to use in massage therapy. It can also be rubbed on the feet before bedtime to promote a restful night’s sleep.
- Roman Chamomile grows close to the ground, reaching only up to a foot in height. It has gray-green leaves, flowers that resemble a daisy, and smells like apple. The plant has been nicknamed the “plant’s physician” because it has positive effects on plants growing nearby. Ancient Romans used the oil for courage during war. While the most common use of chamomile is in teas, Roman Chamomile can also be found in face creams, drinks, hair dyes, shampoos, and perfumes. Roman Chamomile has a calming effect on the skin, mind, and body.* It soothes body systems.*
- Patchouli is a bushy herb from the mint family with stems reaching two or three feet in height and bearing small, pink-white flowers. The fragrance of Patchouli provides a grounding, balancing effect on emotions.
- Cedarwood is known for its rich hue and warm, woody scent, Cedarwood essential oil provides a myriad of benefits. It is native to cold climates, thriving in high altitudes and growing up to 100 feet. Reminiscent of its size and strength, Cedarwood has a grounding aroma that evokes feelings of wellness and vitality. When applied topically, Cedarwood has clarifying properties. Additionally, Cedarwood is frequently used in massage therapy to relax and soothe the mind and body.
- Spikenard, a flowering plant of the Valerian family, is native to high altitudes in the sub-alpine and alpine regions of the Himalayan mountains. Spikenard essential oil is steam distilled from the roots of the plant and has been valued for centuries, traditionally used to anoint people of high honor and in the Ayurvedic health practices of India. Historically, Spikenard was used to uplift mood and promote relaxation. Spikenard promotes clean, healthy skin. Today, the oil is commonly used in perfumes and relaxing massage oils for its woody, musty scent.
Other essential oils for anger
Myrrh – Brings uplifting and soothes anger.
Orange – Can bring feelings of calm and uplifting as well as alleviation of anxiety.
DoTERRA Essential Oils also has a great blend for anger – Forgive. It helps counteract negative emotions of guilt and anger.
BRINGING CALM DURING TIME OF ANGER
These recipes may help bring calm during times of anger.
*When selecting and using essential oils, be sure to follow all safety precautions and remember that aromatherapy should not be used as a substitute for proper medical treatment.
1 drop Rose
3 drops Orange
1 drop Vetiver
3 drops Bergamot
1 drop Ylang Ylang
1 drop Jasmine
1 drop Roman Chamomile
2 drops Bergamot
2 drops Orange
3 drops Orange
2 drops Patchouli
Select one of the blends shown above. Then, choose which method you’d like to use the blend and follow the directions below.
Multiply your blend by 4 to obtain a total of 20 drops of your chosen blend. Add your oils to a dark colored glass bottle and mix well by rollling the bottle in between your hands. Add the appropriate number of drops from your created blend to your diffuser by following the manufacturer’s instructions for your diffuser brand and model.
Another good blend to diffuse to calm down anger is lavender, vetiver, bergamot and patchouli, starting with fifteen minutes a day.
Multiply your blend by 3 to obtain a total of 15 drops of your chosen blend. Continue by using the 15 drop blend in a mix of 1 & 1/4 cup of Epsom salts, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup carrier oil. Keep stored in a glass jar and use in the bath or shower.
Roller Bottle Blend
Multiply your blend by 4 to obtain a total of 20 drops of your chosen blend. Continue by using the 10 drop blend in a 10 ml roller bottle topped off with the carrier oil of your choice. This is a 1 to 10 ratio. If you feel you need a little more, you can add up to 25-30 drops of essential oil for a more powerful effect.
Other ways to use essential oils for anger
If conversation is difficult without angry outbursts, Roman Chamomile can be diffused or applied over the throat. Roman Chamomile helps bring emotional balance and stabilize anger.
Because Lavender is soothing and calming, I use Lavender to help release tension and angry feelings by inhaling straight from the bottle or by rubbing into the back of my neck.
CLEARING ANGER AND FRUSTRATION
If you are dealing with pent up frustration and anger then a great essential oil to turn to is Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
Ylang Ylang is well known for its ability to balance masculine and feminine energies in the body, but it is also an excellent tool for supporting you to release built up or blocked emotions.
The main organ I focus on is the liver. The liver is the organ that holds a lot of emotional residue, particularly anger. This is because it is a filtration organ. Every time you have an emotional reaction your body releases hormones and endorphins. The liver is a part of how your body cleanses them from the body. The draw back of this is that there is always a tiny residue left in the liver, and over years of emotional reactions, the residue builds up (I like to think if it like sediment in a river). Every time you have a reaction your body releases fresh hormones and endorphins, as well as the ones stored in the liver and so what would have been a small reaction, gets blown out of proportion and you are just caught tumbling in the wave, waiting to come up for air.
How to use Ylang Ylang to clear the emotional residue:
Put 1-3 drops in the palm of your hand
Rub hand together 3 x clockwise
Hold one over the liver and the other, cup over the face
On the inhale breath, take the fragrance and energy of oil down the center of the body to the liver.
On the exhale, imagine that there is a door in the liver and it opens and release the energy that is stuck inside.
Repeat 10-20 deep inhalations.
To really makes changes, this is a great practice to get into on a regular basis. If I’m working through a particular issue then I tend to do this on a daily basis till I run through the bottle, or when after a few weeks, I “forget” to do it. It tends to suggest that I’ve shifted the energy.
If you don’t want to use the drop on your hand you can put a roller ball on the top of the bottle and then you can just roll it over the liver on a daily basis.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil can be diffused or applied to the feet. I often place it on my spine at my lower back when my anger is related to PMS.
Of course, you always want to use pure therapeutic grade essential oils. If an oil doesn’t work there is a good chance it is adulterated or cut. That is why I personally use doTERRA Essential Oils. Burning them actually destroys the chemical constituents. So always use a diffuser.
