Essential Oils and Surgery – A Real World Experience

My mom had surgery this week and this has presented plenty of opportunities to use essential oils to support both her physical and emotional health. But just exactly how can essential oils help with surgery and recovery? Let me give you a few examples of how I’ve been using them the past several days.

doterra-on-guardWell to start, we’ve been using On Guard essential oil, which is an immunity boosting blend of Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark/Leaf, Eucalyptus Leaf and Rosemary Leaf/Flower. On Guard also protects against environmental threats (like those found in hospitals) and promotes healthy circulation, which, when you are recovering from surgery and are confined to a recliner, your circulatory system needs all the help it can get! We’ve applied On Guard topically on the soles of the feet as well as diffused it overnight in her hospital room.

Secondly, anyone who’s had surgery knows how anxious you can get – both before and after. Lavender essential oil and my Citrus Bliss blend did wonders at helping alleviate her anxiety and stress. Just placing a few drops in the palm of her hand and inhaling the aromas lifted her spirits. After a few whiffs, she just rubbed the rest on the back her neck and insides of her wrists. I’ve also been diffusing Citrus Bliss during the day to keep her spirits up. Citrus Bliss combines Wild Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Bergamot, Tangerine and Clementine (with just a hint of Vanilla Absolute) for the perfect pick me up and de-stresser.

Finally, my Cypress essential has come in handy. Cypress essential oil is a diuretic and helps the body remove excess water and salt that can lead to fluid retention. It also stimulates circulation by increasing blood flow. As my mom had significant post-operative swelling due to the IV fluids, anesthesia and the pain medications, I combined 3 drops of Cypress essential oil into a two teaspoons of fractionated coconut oil and have been massaging it into her legs and feet. Since doing this, we have noticed a decrease in the fluid retention.

Have you ever had surgery or other medical procedure and used essential oils to support your recovery? If so, what essential oils did you use and for what?
