What Is Body Burden?

What exactly does “body burden” mean?
The term refers to the total amount of accumulated chemical contaminants in the body.  It can either refer to all the toxins present as a group, or it can refer to specific toxins such as mercury, lead, or BPA.

Doesn’t the body detoxify itself of chemicals?
Yes, but some chemicals like DDT and other pesticides can remain in the body for up to 50 years.  Others, like arsenic, can be broken down by the body in small amounts.  However, if you keep getting exposed to chemicals day after day, even the ones the body can break down can begin to build up in your organs, fatty tissue, blood, and even your brain cells.

How quickly does a person begin to accumulate toxins?
Unfortunately, it can begin to accumulate almost as soon as you come into this world.  Many of the fire retardants used in baby products can accumulate in the body of a toddler.  Chemicals are present in the water we drink and in the air we breathe.  Processed foods, and particularly those grown with any number of pesticides and insecticides, are a major contributor to body burden.  BPA, a harmful chemical used to make plastic, is found in baby bottles, plastic food containers, store receipts, and is now found in trace amounts on the cash money we handle on a daily basis.

OK, but is every single chemical out there bad for us?
We don’t know!
Of the 80,000 chemicals that are used in food processing, agriculture, and manufacturing, only a few hundred have actually been tested!

Should I move to a rural area to get away from toxins?
Nature is always good, but moving to the wilderness will not get you away from chemicals.  It is estimated that every person on the planet now has over 700 contaminants in his or her body.  Many of these contaminants can travel on dust particles carried by the wind.  They find their way into water supplies, interior air, and soil.  The entire surface of the Earth has been affected in this way for well over a century now.

What do I do to lower my body burden?
First, we should all take a proactive stance toward helping our bodies detoxify themselves from the accumulated chemicals in our system.   In addition to natural supplements, investing in home water purification (buy here), air purifiers (buy here) , and eating all organic, Non-GMO foods is the best way to minimize your exposure to harmful chemical agents.

For information on a study conducted by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, in collaboration with the Environmental Working Group regarding the chemicals and toxins found in nine humans (who do NOT work with chemicals) click here.  The statistics are disturbing.

In addition, using essential oils to make your own bath, beauty & household cleaning products is another way to reduce exposure to toxins and chemicals found in commercially manufactured products.  Make sure to use organic and natural bases (cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, etc. when making these products ) Many alternative, natural remedies can be made from essential oils also.  Instead of using Tylenol at the first sign of a headache, try rubbing some diluted peppermint oil (buy here) on your temples, forehead and base of the neck.
