Essential Oils for Foot Baths & Soaks

We ask our feet to do a lot. They carry us around day in a day out. They bear the brunt of us pounding them on concrete while running (or in my case walking) for exercise. They take a beating in our high heels so we look good.  They carry us around running errands for our family.  And, they often get neglected.  I know when sandal season comes around we take the time to go get a pedicure so our feet don’t look bad, but it’s important to take care of our feet –  more than just a pedicure too. I’ve been making a point to soak my feet once a week with a homemade bath soak and I’ve been lathering them up nightly  with a rich cream and have noticed a huge difference.  Here are some quick foot bath & soak recipes to help rest, relax and refresh your feet!

Essential Oils For Foot Baths

  • Peppermint – an anti-inflammatory with soothing properties.
  • Lavender – soothing and relaxing.
  • Rosemary – mild stimulant and good for rheumatic aches and pains.
  • Lemon – refreshing and revitalising, will stimulate circulation.
  • Eucalyptus – powerful bactericidal with anti-viral properties, good disinfectant.
  • Tea Tree – disinfectant: use for blisters, fungal infections, athletes foot, insect bites

FOOT SOAKS

BASIC FOOT DETOX: Big 1/2 gallon Mason jar , 1 cup of Epsom Salt, 1 cup of Sea Salt, 2 cups of Baking Soda, and several drops of Lavender essential oil….

Put the top on and shake!  Take 1/4 cup of the mixture….add it to a plastic dish pan filled with the hot/very warm water and soak  tired, aching feet!

P.S. This is actually a “recipe” for a Foot DETOX so I have included the other instructions from An Apple A Day Wisdom:

“The ions in the salt work as magnets to draw toxins through the skin of your feet out of your body into the foot soak water.  After the thirty minutes are up, dry feet then wash with warm soapy water, dry again then brush the bottoms of feet with a natural fiber foot brush. Only use 100% aloe vera after you are finished. Lotions with additives will leech impurities back into your system after a foot detox. This detox should be done daily for one week. Then twice a week for 30 days. Then once a week for regular maintenance.”

  A couple of GREAT additions:

  • Try putting some peppermint, basil and rosemary essential oils in as well. The peppermint is cooling, the basil is warming and the rosemary is anti-viral/anti-fungal!
  • Add marbles into your container and roll your feet over them for a massage. Works great!

Lavender foot soak

Lavender is a popular ingredient used for preparing relaxing bubble baths, foot soaks, and massages. It has amazing relaxation properties including a soothing aroma that works wonders for any spa, soak, and massage treatment.

Ingredients:

  • About 4-5 liter of water
  • Two drops of lavender essential oil
  • ¼ cup of sea/Epsom salt

Preparation:

  • Boil the water and let it cool down to a comfortable temperature.
  • Add lavender oil and salt.
  • Put your feet in, soak, and relax.

Ylang Ylang foot soak

Ylang Ylang oil is extracted from a tall tropical tree (found in Java, Sumatra, Reunion Island, Madagascar, and the Comoros) with large, fragrant pink/mauve/yellow flowers. It has an exotic, sweet smell that’s deeply relaxing.

Ingredients:

  • About 4-5 liter of water
  • Two drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil
  • ¼ cup of sea/Epsom salt

Preparation:

  • Boil the water and let it cool down a bit.
  • Now add two drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil and Epsom salt to this water.
  • Soak your feet in and allow yourself to relax.
